CRANE

“Where is she?” I mutter as the door creaks open and in walk Henry the guard and two black-suited men I’ve never seen.

First people I’ve seen the last couple of days. Though maybe it’s been more than a couple of days. Hard to tell since I’ve been in solitary, chained to the wall, locked in a windowless cell with a blinding white light that won’t turn off. Can’t sleep. Can barely stretch my body. Is this shit even legal?! Never heard about an inmate being treated like this. And who the fuck are these guys in black suits?

“Medics say heartrate is . . . weird,” says Henry the guard. Not sure why he’s passing on messages from the medics. Doesn’t seem like it’s his job.

One of the Blacksuits flips through a black tablet computer and grunts. “Yeah, I see what you mean. Unusually low heartrate—almost inhumanly low. But loud like a drum.”

“I can hear it all the way across the room,” says Blacksuit #2 with a lopsided grin. He clicks his heels and claps his hands. “Should we all dance before carving him up to see what’s inside?”

They all laugh as I blink in confusion. I wonder what I missed. Do they somehow know I’m a Dragon? How? I’m pretty sure I didn’t Change. Fuck, no way I Changed. If I had, everyone in the prison would be indistinguishable from Li’l Smokies. So what happened? Did Callie lose her nerve and turn me in? Did she change her mind the moment she was back in her cozy little office, her normal little life?

And if she did, can I blame her? Maybe she said what she said just to get out of the room. If she actually felt what I felt, saw how obvious it was that we’re mates, understood that we were born for each other, that we’ll die for each other . . . yeah, if she’d felt any of that would she have grabbed her stuff and said, “Um, I need some time!”?

“Get real, Crane. You lost her before you even had her,” I whisper. “You’re alone, Crane. Fucking get used to it. Shouldn’t be hard, bro. You’ve had decades of training, right?”

I let the loneliness flow through me, and I welcome its cold power. It’s almost liberating, ain’t it? Now I got nothing to lose. No reason to control myself. No reason for my Dragon to control itself. If our mate has chosen to walk away, what can we do? Can’t force her to be mine. I’m not that sort of man. So fuck it, yeah, Dragon-breath? Time to blow the lid off this thing. These fuckers wanna slice me up and see what’s inside? How about my Dragon swallows you whole and you can take all the time you need to check out my gullet?

I narrow my eyes as the two Blacksuits and Henry lower their voices. I feel my Dragon stir inside me, and I know the beast is watching. I close my eyes and exhale, letting my Dragon’s power flow through me.
